Maypole Raising with the Gosau Schuhplattler
Traditional Folk Custom in the Gosau Valley am Dachstein
Gosau celebrates spring: on April 30, locals and visitors gather at Gasthof Kirchenwirt in Gosau am Dachstein for the annual maypole raising with the Gosauer Schuhplattler. As it has been for generations, the maypole is erected by hand using long wooden poles – living folklore in the UNESCO World Heritage Salzkammergut. The Schuhplattler are a traditional Bavarian and Austrian folk dance group, known for their energetic performances featuring rhythmic slapping of the thighs, knees and shoe soles – one of the most iconic expressions of Alpine folk culture.
With views of the impressive Gosaukamm, regional delicacies and genuine Gosau hospitality await. For guests of Vitalhotel Gosau, the Kirchenwirt is just a 15-minute walk away – the ideal base to experience this and many more highlights of the Gosau events calendar in the Salzkammergut.
