History
The Rudolfsturm, once known as "Ruedolfstain" in the 16th century, has a multifaceted construction history. Its construction is often dated to the year 1284. In the Middle Ages, it served as a defensive tower and was connected to a wooden porch until the 19th century. The south-western structure housed the tailor's room and a kitchen on the first floor, with windows overlooking the Salt Mountain and Hallstatt market. Remodeling work in 1833 brought changes, while the porch, tailor's room and kitchen retained their spatial openness.
The Rudolfsturm underwent further transformations in the 20th century. The tower served as an administrative building until 1954, but then lost its function. It was converted into a restaurant, which meant that the tower was preserved. In the 1960s, the space was extended and a hall was added on the north-east side. This extension fell victim to snow pressure in 2006. As part of the Upper Austrian Provincial Exhibition in 2008, the Rudolfsturm was completely renovated and an extension was added on the mountain side to allow visitors to experience the historic site.
