Event Tip
Almabtrieb Festival in Gosau
On September 19, starting at 1:00 p.m., Gosau celebrates golden autumn with the traditional alpine cattle drive, during which festively decorated alpine cows make their way down into the valley in the Salzkammergut. The event is accompanied by Gosau folk music and traditional Schuhplattler dances, while visitors enjoy regional alpine delicacies such as Holzknechtnocken. Traditional crafts from Gosau will also be on display at the Moosalm in Gosau.
September and October are the sweet spot: the forests blaze with fall color, the mountain air is crisp and clear, and the trails are far less crowded than in summer. Most of the region's top attractions, including the Hallstatt Salt Mines, the Dachstein-Krippenstein Caves, and the Gosaukamm gondola, are open through the end of October.
Yes! The Salzkammergut Summer Card is valid through October 31 and gets you free admission or discounts at dozens of partner attractions across the region, from the Hallstatt Salt Mines to boat rides on Lake Hallstatt. Hotel guests receive the card complimentary, just ask at the front desk when you check in.
World-famous Hallstatt is just a 15-minute drive from Vitalhotel Gosau. The Dachstein Caves near Obertraun, home to the Ice Cave, the Mammoth Cave, and the breathtaking 5Fingers viewing platform are about 30 minutes away. The Gosaukamm gondola, right in the village of Gosau, whisks you up to over 5,600 ft (1,700 m) in just a few minutes.
The Vitalhotel Gosau is located in the heart of the Dachstein Salzkammergut hiking region. Starting right from the hotel, you can access numerous hiking trails suitable for all fitness levels, ranging from leisurely valley trails to summit hikes with views of the Dachstein. Recommended hikes, Nordic walking poles, and hiking backpacks are available at the front desk.
Absolutely! Local guide Betty Jehle leads weekly guided hikes through the stunning fall landscape around Gosau. Every Friday, the Gosau Valley hike is included complimentary for all hotel guests. Hiking poles and backpacks are available to borrow at the front desk, so you can hit the trail whenever the mood strikes.
Yes! Klettersteig Park Gosau offers 11 secured via ferrata routes for every skill level from beginner-friendly Grade A/B climbs to the challenging Gosauschmied Hammer, an overhanging wall rated Grade F. The park was built by mountain guide Walter Laserer of Laserer Alpin, who still leads guided courses today. For a bigger adrenaline rush, the Donnerkogel via ferrata famous for its spectacular 130-ft (40 m) Sky Ladder is one for experienced climbers only, but rewards you with jaw-dropping views across the Gosau Valley. The season runs through mid-October; courses can be booked directly at our front desk.
The trails around Gosau are typically rideable well into October, depending on conditions. Valley routes and forest roads tend to stay in great shape the longest and with far fewer riders than in summer, fall is one of the best times to explore. Swing by the front desk for current trail conditions and route tips.
Yes!
